How Sport Is Run

Presidents Cup Format: Four-Ball, Foursomes and 30 Points

The short answer

The Presidents Cup is a four-day match-play contest between a 12-player United States team and a 12-player International team excluding Europe. Thirty matches are worth one point each: five on Thursday, five on Friday, eight across Saturday and 12 singles on Sunday. Four-ball and foursomes make up the team sessions. A team needs 15.5 points to win; if the final score is 15-15, the teams share the Cup.

The International team excludes Europe

The Presidents Cup matches the United States against players from the rest of the world except Europe. European golfers have the Ryder Cup as their equivalent team contest.

Each side has 12 players and a captain. The competition is match play, so holes and matches—not total tournament strokes—create the score.

Thirty matches create thirty points

Each match is worth one point. A win earns one, while a match tied after 18 holes gives each team half a point.

With 30 points available, 15.5 guarantees victory. A final 15-15 does not trigger extra holes; the teams share the Cup.

Thursday and Friday contain five matches each

The opening two days use four-ball and foursomes, one format per day. The order can be selected for the edition.

Five matches mean ten players compete while two from each team sit out the session. Captains therefore control both partnerships and rest.

Saturday doubles the session count

Saturday contains eight matches split between a morning and afternoon session, using both four-ball and foursomes.

In four-ball, each partner plays a ball and the lower score counts. In foursomes, partners alternate strokes on one ball. The same Rules of Golf support two very different partnership tests.

Sunday sends out all twelve players

The final day has 12 singles matches. Every player participates and each faces one direct opponent.

That structure creates nearly half the available points on the final day, so even a large Saturday lead may remain mathematically vulnerable.

Concessions are part of match play

A player may concede a stroke, hole or match under golf’s match-play concession rules. A conceded short putt is finished legally even though the ball never enters the hole.

The concession is final; it is not an informal favour that can be withdrawn after the opponent acts.

It resembles the Ryder Cup but is not identical

Both events use foursomes, four-ball and singles, but the opponents, schedule and tie rule are competition-specific. The Ryder Cup format also lets a defending side retain the trophy in a tie, whereas the Presidents Cup is shared.

The broad vocabulary may match, but the regulations decide what each point means.
