Rowing at LA28: Lightweights Gone, Beach Sprints In, and 1,500 Metres

A weight category disappeared from the Games

Lightweight rowing existed for a specific reason: rowing rewards size enormously, and without a category for smaller athletes the sport is close to closed to them.

The IOC removed all lightweight events from the 2028 programme. Paris 2024 was the last Olympic lightweight regatta.

The category has not been abolished — it continues outside the Olympics. What it lost was its Olympic events, which for most athletes is the same thing in practice, because Olympic qualification is what funding and careers are built around.

Why a weight class is a different kind of removal

Cutting an event is routine. Cutting a weight category removes a class of athlete.

When Olympic sports drop a discipline, competitors usually move to a neighbouring event. A lightweight rower cannot simply move to open-weight racing — the whole point of the category was that they are physically outmatched there.

Compare weightlifting or boxing, where the entire competitive structure is weight classes. Removing one there would be understood immediately as removing people, not events.

Beach sprints arrive with three medals

In their place, beach sprint rowing enters the programme with three medal events: men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, and a mixed double.

Beach sprints are a coastal format: raced from a beach, in head-to-head knockouts rather than as a timed lane race.

That format choice matters more than the discipline. Classic rowing is a time trial in lanes, often decided by margins invisible to spectators. A knockout on a beach produces a visible winner in every race.

It is the same reasoning that produced lacrosse sixes and 3x3 basketball — a compressed, legible format designed to be selected and watched.

And the course gets shorter, for one Games

The Olympic and Paralympic regattas at LA28 will be raced over 1,500 metres instead of the standard 2,000.

The scope is narrow and worth stating precisely: qualification regattas and other competition remain at 2,000 metres. The shortened distance applies to the Games, not to the sport.

That is an unusual arrangement. It means Olympic results will be set over a distance that is not the sport’s own championship distance, so Olympic times will not be comparable with the times the rest of the calendar produces.

What the package says

Read the three changes together and they point one way.

A category that served smaller athletes was removed. A format that is shorter, cheaper to stage and easier to follow was added. And the flagship event was shortened for the Games alone.

None of that is about making rowing a better contest. It is about making the Olympic rowing programme smaller, faster and more watchable, which is what the selection criteria explicitly ask for.

Whether the trade was worth it is a judgement. That it was a trade is not in question.
