Skeleton's Rules: They Hang a Spare Runner Outside to Check Yours Isn't Warm

The rule that explains the whole sport
Before a skeleton race, someone hangs a spare runner outside.
It has to be made of standard IBSF material, positioned in the open air 45 minutes before the start, in the same weather as the sleds that will race, and when it goes out it must read between +18°C and +22°C. Its temperature is written on a board in the start area, alongside the air and ice temperatures, and updated on a fixed schedule through the competition.
That hanging blade is the reference runner. Every competitor’s runners are measured against it, on the side of the runner by the runner post, with an electronic sensor held there until the reading stabilises.
If your runners are more than 4°C warmer than the reference, a second measurement is taken immediately. If that also exceeds the limit, it is immediate disqualification.
And if the reference runner itself falls below -14°C, an absolute ceiling applies instead: your runners may be no warmer than -10°C.
Why warm steel is cheating
Ice is slippery because a thin film of water forms under pressure at the contact point. A warmer runner forms that film faster and more generously.
The gain is small and the sport is decided by hundredths. Skeleton medals have been settled by less than a tenth of a second across four runs, so an advantage measured in thousandths per metre is decisive.
The temptation, then, is obvious: keep the sled indoors, warm the blades, carry it out at the last moment.
Which is exactly what the rulebook forecloses, clause by clause. The sled must be carried to the measuring station with the runners held away from the athlete’s body — because a runner pressed against a warm torso is a warmed runner. And cooling them by touching snow or ice is also banned, so the rule cannot be beaten in the other direction either.
The reference runner solves the problem the thermometer cannot
Here is what makes this design clever rather than merely strict.
A fixed temperature limit would be unenforceable. A race in Lake Placid in January and a race in Cortina in November are not the same environment, and a rule saying “runners must be below -5°C” would be trivially satisfied on one day and impossible on another.
So the IBSF does not measure your runners against a number. It measures them against a piece of steel that has been sitting in the same weather you have.
The reference runner is a control sample. It answers the only question that matters — has this blade been artificially warmed, or is it simply the temperature the day made it? — without the rule needing to know anything about the day.
That is a piece of rule-making worth borrowing. Compare World Athletics measuring shoe soles on a standard 270mm sample, or open water swimming averaging three readings at 40cm depth: where a limit must survive varying conditions, the good answer is usually a defined control, not a tighter number.
Weight, and where ballast may sit
Combined weight of the sled and the athlete with full race equipment: 120kg for men, 102kg for women. The sled alone: 45kg and 38kg.
A heavier system is faster down a track — more momentum, less proportional effect from air resistance — so the cap is what stops skeleton becoming a contest in how much mass you can push.
The maximum may be reached by adding ballast, which must be securely affixed to the frame, base plate or saddle. Ballast on the athlete’s body is prohibited.
That last clause is a safety rule wearing an equipment rule’s clothes. A slider travelling at 130km/h who crashes will separate from the sled; weight strapped to a body is weight that arrives at the wall with the body. Keeping ballast on the sled means the mass and the person can part company.
It also removes an obvious loophole. Weight worn under a race suit is very hard to check, while weight bolted to a base plate is visible on the scale and in the parc fermé.
No handles, arms outside
Two clauses that sound minor and define the sport’s posture.
No handles, however constructed, are permitted, and the athlete’s arms must be outside the saddle during each heat.
So the slider is not holding on to anything. They lie prone on a bare sled at 130km/h with their arms by their sides, steering with shoulders, knees and toes — subtle shifts of weight against a sled they cannot grip.
Handles would make skeleton safer to ride and much easier to steer, which is precisely why they are banned. The absence is the discipline.
Luge riders lie on their backs; bobsleigh crews have a steering mechanism and a brake. Skeleton has neither a brake nor anything to hold.
The finish is defined by the helmet
Timing runs from the 50m point, not from the push — so the sprint start is not itself timed, only its result.
And the finish beam must be broken by the athlete’s helmet, with the athlete on the sled.
That is a precise answer to an untidy question. A sled and a prone body arrive at the line as one long object; without a definition, the timing would depend on which part happened to be leading. Fixing it to the helmet makes it consistent — and since the head is at the front, it also means a slider cannot gain by stretching.
There is one humane exception. In a crash, the athlete need only cross the finish beam in contact with the sled to be ranked. Separated from your sled, you are not classified; still touching it, however inelegantly, you have finished.
