Sixty points for hitting the target
Every hill has a K-point — its construction point, the distance the hill is designed around.

Reach it and you score exactly 60 distance points. Beyond it you gain 1.2 to 2.0 points per metre, depending on hill size; short of it you lose the same.
The K-point is not a maximum or a record. It is a zero line, chosen for each hill, that makes jumps on different hills comparable. Sixty points on a normal hill and sixty on a large hill represent very different distances and the same achievement.
Style is judged, and the outliers are thrown away
Five judges award style marks up to 20 each, assessing flight, landing and the outrun.
The highest and lowest are discarded, leaving three — so the maximum style score is 60, the same as the K-point’s distance value.
That symmetry is deliberate. Distance and style are weighted equally at the reference point, which is a statement about what ski jumping is: not a distance contest with tidiness marks attached, but a sport where how you flew and landed matters as much as how far.
The discard mechanism is the same one surfing uses — a single outlying judge cannot move the result without help.
And then the wind is refunded
Here is what makes ski jumping’s scoring genuinely unusual among Olympic sports.
Since 2009, FIS adjusts every jump for wind and gate.
A headwind creates lift and helps a jumper fly further, so points are subtracted. A tailwind reduces lift and shortens the jump, so points are added.
Read that again. The sport takes points away from an athlete who jumped further, because the conditions helped, and gives points to one who jumped shorter, because the conditions did not.
Why a sport would do that
Most sports treat conditions as part of the contest. Sailing does. Surfing explicitly does not compensate for unequal waves.
Ski jumping cannot afford to, for a reason that is not about fairness first. Wind on a jumping hill changes minute to minute, and a competition takes hours. Without compensation, a start list becomes a lottery, and — more importantly — organisers face pressure to run jumps in dangerous conditions rather than concede an advantage to whoever went earlier.
The gate factor works the same way. The start gate can be moved to control speed for safety; the compensation means moving it does not distort the result, so officials can lower the run-in when the wind picks up without anyone losing out.
Compensation is therefore a safety mechanism wearing a fairness costume. It removes the competitive cost of doing the safe thing.

A ski jumping score is three separate things added together:
Distance, measured against a hill-specific zero. Style, judged by humans with outliers removed. Compensation, calculated from instruments measuring wind and gate position.
Three different kinds of evidence — a measurement, a judgement and an adjustment — combined into one number. Very few sports mix all three.
