Trampoline Gymnastics Measures How Long You Are in the Air

Half the score is not an opinion
A trampoline routine’s total is assembled from four components, less penalties:
Difficulty — the value of each skill performed.
Execution — form, control and the quality of the final landing, assessed by judges.
Time of flight — how long the gymnast is in the air, measured electronically, to the thousandth of a second.
Horizontal displacement — how far from the centre of the bed each landing occurs, also measured electronically.
Two of those four are instrument readings. Nobody forms a view about them, and no judge can be lobbied over them.
That is unusual among judged sports and it is the reason trampoline’s results are among the least disputed in gymnastics.
Why time in the air is worth measuring
Height is the whole sport.
A gymnast performing a triple somersault with twists needs time to complete the rotation, and the only source of time is airtime. A routine performed low is a routine in which every skill is rushed, under-rotated, and landed early.
Judges can see height, roughly, and they are much worse at it than a clock. A tenth of a second across ten skills is a large difference and an almost invisible one to the eye.
Measuring flight time also removes a strategic problem. Without it, a gymnast could perform a technically clean routine at low height and be scored well on execution — a safer, easier routine scoring like a hard one. Making airtime a direct component means that route is closed.
Compare diving’s degree of difficulty, where the sport also took a large part of the score out of the judges’ hands — though there it went to a table rather than to a sensor.
Displacement is a safety rule in the scoring
Landing away from the centre of the bed is penalised through the displacement score.
The obvious reading is that it measures control, and it does. Drifting across the bed means the gymnast is not travelling straight up and down, which is a technical fault.
The less obvious reading is that it is a safety provision written into the score. A trampoline’s edge is where the injuries happen. A gymnast who drifts far enough leaves the bed, and at the heights elite trampolinists reach that is a serious fall.
By scoring displacement continuously, the sport makes staying centred profitable rather than merely advisable — the same instinct as the NFL’s touchback spot or the free guard zone: price the behaviour you want rather than forbidding its opposite.
And note that it is scored per landing, not as a single average. A gymnast cannot bank a centred first half and drift through the second.
What execution judges are left with
With difficulty tabulated, flight timed and displacement measured, the human panel is left assessing form and control in each element and the final landing.
That is a narrow and well-defined job: legs together, toes pointed, shape held, no correction on landing. Deductions run in tenths against a schedule.
Narrowing the judged component is exactly what figure skating and artistic swimming have both done since their own controversies — reduce the space in which opinion operates, and the results become defensible.
Trampoline went furthest, because it had something the others do not: a physical quantity that correlates directly with quality and can be measured by a machine.
The general lesson
Most judged sports would love to replace judgement with measurement and cannot, because what they are assessing — a floor routine’s artistry, a snowboard run’s style — has no instrument.
Trampoline is the exception. Height and position are physical facts, they matter enormously, and they can be captured to three decimal places.
Where such a quantity exists, a sport should use it. Where it does not, no amount of wanting one makes a sensor available — which is why snowboarding still scores on overall impression and always will.
