F1's 2026 Rules: The Aerodynamics Were Designed Around the Battery

Start with the number that forced everything else

Those two figures are the 2026 regulations. Everything visible about the cars follows from the arithmetic they create.
A 350kW motor is easy to specify and hard to feed. On a long straight, a car deploying that much electrically will empty its store long before the braking zone — and once it is empty, the car is down to an engine that has itself been reduced to around 400kW. Deployment that runs out is worse than deployment you never had, because everyone can see it happening.
So the sport had a choice: recover more energy, or need less of it.
Which is why drag fell 55%
Downforce is down about 30%. Drag is down about 55%.
Notice that those are not the same cut. Drag was reduced almost twice as hard as downforce — the regulations deliberately went after drag specifically, because drag is what determines how much energy a straight consumes.
A conventional aerodynamic rewrite trims both together. This one is lopsided on purpose. It is not an aerodynamic philosophy at all; it is an energy decision expressed in bodywork.
The cars also shrink: the wheelbase is 200mm shorter at 3.4m, floor width down 100mm to 1.9m, tyres narrower front and rear, and minimum weight down from 800kg to 768kg. Less car to push, less car to accelerate, less energy per lap.
Active aero is a fuel-saving device that happens to look like DRS
Both the front and rear wings move, switching between a high-downforce configuration for corners and a low-drag one for straights.
It is tempting to read this as DRS made permanent. It is closer to the opposite.
DRS was a competitive device: available to one car, in one place, under one condition, to make passing possible. The 2026 wings are available to everyone, all the time, and their purpose is stated in efficiency terms — minimising consumption on the straights and maximising cornering performance in the corners.
A tool everybody has at every moment is not an overtaking aid. It is simply how the car works. Which left the sport needing something else to do the job DRS was doing.
Overtaking moved from air to energy
That something is a manual override: a burst of extra battery power when a driver is within one second of the car ahead.
The condition is inherited directly from DRS — the one-second gap, the detection point, the proximity-triggered advantage. What changed is the currency. The chasing car is no longer given less drag; it is given more energy.
That is a meaningfully different kind of help. Reduced drag is nearly free and nearly automatic. A battery boost is spent: use it here and it is unavailable there, and the car ahead is managing the same finite store while defending.
The overtake becomes a decision about when, rather than a gift that arrives at a fixed point on the circuit. Whether it produces better racing is an open question — but it is at least a question about driving.

The MGU-H is gone, and that is why there are new engines
The 2014-generation power units recovered energy from exhaust heat as well as from braking. That system was brilliant, extremely expensive, and almost impossible for a new manufacturer to master — which is precisely why it was dropped.
Removing it makes an F1 power unit a simpler object: a turbocharged V6 and a large electric motor, recovering under braking, running on advanced sustainable fuels.
Simpler is the point. The 2026 formula was written to be enterable, and the grid answered — 11 teams, 22 cars, the first 22-car field since 2016, with six cars eliminated in Q1 and Q2 instead of five while Q3 stays at ten.
A technical regulation that changes the size of the grid has done something most regulations never manage. The same logic — lower the barrier and the entrants appear — sits behind Financial Fair Play and the cost cap.
Safety kept moving in the background
Three changes, none of which will be televised.
The roll hoop vertical impact test rises from 16g to 20g, after a decade in which roll hoop failures were a live concern.
The nose becomes a two-stage front impact structure, specifically to reduce the risk of the nose detaching — a failure mode that turns a survivable crash into an unprotected one.
And side intrusion requirements are strengthened around the driver and the fuel cell.
That last one matters more in 2026 than it did before. A car carrying a much larger battery is carrying a different kind of stored energy, and the structure around it has to be sized for what it now contains.
