F1's 2026 Rules: DRS Is Gone and the Cars Are Half Electric

Every one of those is a significant change on its own. Arriving together, they make 2026 the largest technical discontinuity in Formula 1 since the hybrid era began.
Half the power is now electric
The headline number is the split. About 400kW from the engine and 350kW from the electric side — close to 50:50, where the previous generation was heavily weighted toward internal combustion.
Two changes produce it.
The MGU-H is gone. It recovered energy from exhaust gas driving a turbine. It was extraordinarily effective and extraordinarily expensive, and it was widely blamed for how difficult it had become for a new manufacturer to enter the sport. Removing it is as much an entry-barrier decision as an engineering one.
The MGU-K is roughly tripled, harvesting and deploying about three times what it did before. The energy the MGU-H used to capture now has to come from braking instead, which changes how a driver must manage a lap.
The combined figure lands near 1,000 horsepower, so the cars are not slower. The power simply arrives from a different place and has to be earned differently.
DRS is gone after fifteen years
This is the change spectators will notice first.
DRS — the rear wing that opened in designated zones when a car was within a second of the one ahead — had been the primary passing aid since 2011. It always attracted the same objection: it manufactured overtakes in fixed places rather than rewarding a driver who had set the move up.
Two systems replace it, and the distinction between them matters.
Overtake Mode (called Manual Override Mode earlier in development) is conditional. A driver within one second of the car ahead may deploy up to 0.5MJ of extra electrical energy from the MGU-K — roughly 67bhp. Crucially it is not tied to a zone. The driver chooses when to spend it, in one burst or spread across the lap.
Boost Mode is unconditional. It can be used at any point on a lap and deploys maximum combined power.
The philosophical shift is real. DRS was a permission — you are close enough, so the wing opens here. Overtake Mode is a budget. The car behind is given a finite resource and must decide where to spend it, which makes the pass a decision rather than a location.
Active aero, on every lap
Both front and rear wings now move, and unlike DRS this is available to every driver on every lap, not just to a car that is chasing.
The wings switch between a low-drag configuration for straights and a high-downforce one for corners — grip where grip is useful, and minimal drag where it is not. That is what allows a lighter, smaller car to keep cornering speed without carrying straight-line penalty all the way round.
It also means the aerodynamic advantage that DRS conferred on the pursuer is gone. Everyone gets the wing. Only the chasing car gets the extra energy.
Lighter, and running on different fuel
The cars are about 30kg lighter. Weight had crept up through the hybrid era to the point where drivers complained the cars had become too large for several circuits, and this is the first meaningful reversal.
Fuel is now 100% advanced sustainable, which the sport states reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65%. That is a regulation with an audience beyond the grid: Formula 1’s usefulness to manufacturers depends on the technology having some relationship to what they sell.
What this tells you about how sport changes
Notice what the FIA did here. It did not adjust one rule and watch. It changed the power unit, the fuel, the aerodynamics, the weight and the overtaking system simultaneously, because each one constrains the others — a lighter car needs less power, active aero changes the value of a slipstream, removing the MGU-H changes what the MGU-K must do.
That is the opposite of how most sports legislate. Baseball introduced its changes one at a time across four seasons and measured each. The NFL can barely change anything at all, because it needs 24 of 32 owners to agree.
Formula 1 can reset everything at once because a single body writes the rules and the teams have no vote. Whether that produces better racing is a question the season answers; that it produces faster change is not in doubt.
