Modern Pentathlon: The Sport That Replaced Its Horse to Stay Olympic

One point, one second

Modern pentathlon’s cleverest rule converts points into time.

Athletes accumulate points across the earlier disciplines. Those points then set the start order for the final Laser Run: the leader goes first, and every other athlete is held back one second for each point they trail by.

The consequence is that the finish line is the result. Whoever crosses first has won — no totals, no comparison of tables, no waiting for a scoreboard.

That is a rare and valuable property. Most multi-discipline sports finish with arithmetic; the decathlon ends with a spreadsheet. Modern pentathlon ends with a race, and a spectator who has watched nothing else can still understand the last five minutes completely.

It makes a deficit visible

The handicap does something else worth noticing: it makes the standings physical.

An athlete twenty points down is not an abstract twenty points down. They are standing twenty seconds behind on the start line, watching the leader go.

Every position in the competition becomes a distance you can see. The sport has translated its scoring into the only unit a viewer needs.

Compare ski jumping’s compensation, which adjusts a number after the fact, or eventing’s penalty totals, which accumulate invisibly. Pentathlon takes the opposite approach: put the whole competition on the track, in metres.

The horse is gone

In November 2021 the UIPM Congress voted to remove riding and replace it with an obstacle course discipline, effective for the 2028 Games.

The reason was not sporting. It was survival on the Olympic programme.

As covered in how a sport gets into the Olympics, inclusion is not permanent and is judged against criteria including cost, complexity of hosting, and youth relevance. Riding requires horses, transport, veterinary provision, and a venue — an expensive discipline for a sport under pressure to justify its place.

An obstacle course requires a structure in a stadium.

What that decision actually was

It is worth being clear about the scale of it. Modern pentathlon was devised around a specific idea — the skills a nineteenth-century cavalry officer might need behind enemy lines — and riding was the core of that idea.

Removing it means the sport no longer describes the thing it was invented to describe. What remains is a combination of disciplines held together by its format rather than by its founding logic.

The UIPM made that trade knowingly. The alternative was a coherent sport that was not at the Olympics, and it judged the format worth preserving more than the premise.

Very few sports have been asked that question so directly, and fewer have answered it so decisively.

Fencing’s bonus round

The fencing element has an unusual second stage. The ranking round produces points from wins, and a bonus round follows in which the ranking round winner can gain further points from a single bout.

That structure rewards winning the ranking round twice over: once in points, and again with a protected opportunity nobody else receives.

It is a small illustration of how the sport is built — every discipline feeds the same currency, and the currency ultimately converts to seconds on a start line.
