Speed Skating's Lane Change: A Rule That Exists to Make the Track Fair

The track is unfair, so the rules move you
An oval has an inner and an outer lane, and the inner is shorter. Any skater who stayed inside for a whole race would travel less far.

Most sports would fix this by seeding — allocate lanes, accept the advantage, and compensate elsewhere. Speed skating does something more direct: it makes you swap.
Skaters change lanes every lap, in a designated crossing straight on the back straight opposite the finish. Over a race, both skaters in a pair cover exactly the same distance.
The unfairness is not compensated for. It is cancelled.
Right of way in the crossing
Two skaters converging at speed on the same piece of ice needs a rule, and speed skating’s is simple: the skater moving from outer to inner has right of way.
The reason is geometric. The skater moving inward is crossing into a lane; the skater moving outward is moving into space that is being vacated. Giving priority to the inward mover means only one of them has to make a decision — the other must simply yield.
That is the same drafting principle as sailing’s right-of-way rules: assign the duty to one party so a collision has a decidable cause.
There is a small exception worth knowing: the first lap of the 1000m and 1500m does not require a crossover.
Team pursuit deletes the lanes
Team pursuit is the same sport with the central rule removed.
There are no inner or outer lanes. Two teams of three start on opposite sides of the track, and skate as a unit — which is the point, because skating in a line lets each skater use the draft of the one ahead.
The lead skater peels off after a lap, the second leads for a lap, and the third finishes. The time is taken on the last skater.
That structure produces the same sacrifice found in track cycling’s team pursuit, and for the same reason: if only the final skater’s time counts, the earlier skaters exist to spend themselves sheltering them.
Mass start is a different sport wearing the same skates
The mass start abandons the time trial entirely. Skaters race together, and the result is decided on points from intermediate sprints and a final sprint.
So the same championships contain two incompatible ideas of what speed skating is: a measurement, where the clock decides and opponents are irrelevant, and a race, where position decides and the clock is irrelevant.
Very few sports run both. Athletics does — a 100m final is a race, but records are measurements — and archery does something similar by scoring recurve on sets and compound on totals.
Why cancelling beats compensating
Speed skating’s lane rule is worth holding up against ski jumping’s wind compensation, which does the opposite.
Ski jumping cannot equalise conditions, so it adjusts the score afterwards. Speed skating can equalise them, so it does — physically, during the race, by making everyone skate both lanes.
Where a sport can remove an inequity rather than price it, it generally should. Compensation always carries an argument about whether the adjustment was right. A crossover carries none: both skaters covered the same ground, and there is nothing to dispute.
