The short answer
The Sudirman Cup is badminton's mixed-team world championship. Sixteen national teams are drawn into four groups of four. Each tie can contain men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles; the first team to win three matches takes the tie. The top two teams in each group reach a knockout draw beginning with the quarter-finals. BWF seeds teams by combining ranking strength across all five events.

It is one championship across five disciplines
The Sudirman Cup combines men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles in one national-team tie.
That composition is the point of the event. A country cannot win the title by being deep in only one half of the sport.
Sixteen teams begin in four groups
The Finals draw places four teams in each of four groups. Every team plays the other three in its group, producing a group ranking.
The top two from each group progress. Group play therefore removes half the field before the knockout draw.
Three match wins decide a tie
A full tie contains one match in each of the five events. The first country to win three matches has secured the tie.
The underlying rallies use the standard badminton rules; the team regulations decide which event is played and how its result contributes to the national score.
Eight teams enter the knockout draw
Quarter-finals begin the elimination phase, followed by semi-finals and the final. The knockout draw is made under restrictions intended to separate teams that have just met in the same group.
A nation that reaches the title tie must therefore survive both a three-tie group and direct elimination.
Seeding adds five ranking components
BWF assesses team strength through ranking points from the leading eligible men’s singles player, women’s singles player, men’s pair, women’s pair and mixed pair.
That method differs from a simple country table. It measures the exact disciplines required to win a Sudirman Cup tie.
It is not the Thomas or Uber Cup
The Sudirman Cup crowns one mixed national team. The Thomas and Uber Cups run parallel men’s and women’s world team championships.
The distinction resembles the difference between individual tennis rules and a national team format: the sport remains the same, but the unit that becomes champion changes.
Format is part of the competitive test
Five events prevent a country from hiding a weak discipline, while group play reduces the risk that one bad opening tie ends the tournament immediately.
The knockout rounds then remove that protection. The champion must display range first and survive pressure second.
