The short answer
The Thomas Cup is badminton's men's team world championship and the Uber Cup is the women's equivalent. They are staged together every two years but remain separate competitions. Each Finals field has 16 nations divided into four groups of four, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals. A tie contains three singles and two doubles matches, and the first team to three wins takes the tie.

Two trophies share one event week
The Thomas Cup and Uber Cup are organised together every two years. They are not two halves of a mixed tie: each produces its own world champion.
The Thomas Cup field is men’s national teams; the Uber Cup field is women’s national teams.
Each Finals contains sixteen nations
Holders, hosts, continental results and ranking routes fill the places under BWF regulations. Each competition then divides its 16 teams into four groups of four.
Every team plays the other three countries in its group. The group ranking decides who remains in title contention.
A tie is three singles and two doubles
Unlike the five-discipline Sudirman Cup, each Thomas or Uber tie draws all five matches from one gender: three singles positions and two doubles positions.
The first country to win three matches secures the tie. Team depth matters because one star cannot play every singles position.
The top two enter the quarter-finals
Eight teams advance from group play to a knockout draw. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final then decide the champion.
The combination rewards consistency across three group ties before turning every later tie into elimination.
Qualification mixes geography and ranking
Continental championships create regional routes, while world-ranking places complete the Finals field. Host and holder provisions prevent the event from excluding its organiser or defending champion.
This is a governance layer above the laws of badminton service, which remain the same inside each individual match.
Match order is strategically important
Teams nominate singles and doubles line-ups under ranking and eligibility rules. Coaches must decide whether strength is concentrated at the top or spread across the tie.
Because three wins finish the contest, early matches can remove the need to play later ones in knockout rounds.
The trophies answer a different question from individual worlds
An individual world title identifies the best player or pair in one discipline. The Thomas and Uber Cups identify the deepest national programme across singles and doubles.
That is why their structure belongs beside other team formats such as the Billie Jean King Cup, not beside an ordinary tournament draw.
