Why this page does not rank anyone
Search for the strongest rugby player and you will find a dozen confident top-ten lists. Almost none of them cite a number that can be checked.
There is a structural reason for that. Rugby publishes no standardised strength testing. No union runs a sanctioned maximal-lift competition. Clubs record gym numbers internally and rarely release them. Testing protocols — bar type, depth, equipment, whether a lift was competition-legal — differ between clubs, so even leaked figures are not comparable.
Without a common test, a ranked list is an opinion with numbers attached to make it look like data. So this page does not produce one. It separates what is traceable to a named published source from what merely circulates, and says which is which.

The England prop Andrew Sheridan is the player most often named, and unusually his figures are attributable: The Guardian described him in 2007 as a near-elite class powerlifter able to bench press 225kg and squat 275kg.
That is a genuinely published figure in a national newspaper, at the time, about a current international. It is not a governing-body test result — no such thing exists — but it is a long way above the standard of evidence behind most claims in this area.
The stronger evidence is what happened on the field
Gym numbers are a proxy. The scrum is the actual test, and Sheridan’s case does not rest on his bench press.
In England’s November 2007 Test against Australia, he played the main role in out-classing the Australian front row. Neither of his opposite numbers finished the match. Al Baxter proved unable to deal with his power and was eventually withdrawn.
Weeks earlier he had been Man of the Match in England’s 12-10 quarter-final win over Australia at the 2007 Rugby World Cup — a result built substantially on the scrum.
That is a repeatable, witnessed, reported outcome against the best available opposition. It is better evidence of applied strength than any number lifted in a gym, because it was produced against international opponents actively resisting.
Why the scrum is not a lifting contest
It is tempting to treat scrummaging as a pure strength event. It is not, and understanding why explains most of the disagreement about “strongest player” claims.
Under World Rugby’s laws, the scrum restarts play with a contest for possession between two organised packs of eight. What decides it is the ability to apply force through a specific body position — height, back angle, binding, and the timing of the engagement — against another eight doing the same thing.
A prop who out-lifts everyone in the gym can still be beaten by an opponent with a better body height and a stronger bind, because force applied at the wrong angle is force wasted. Conversely, a technically excellent scrummager can dominate someone measurably stronger.
This is why lists of “strongest players” correlate so poorly with which packs actually dominated matches.
What we deliberately do not claim
Rugby is unusually resistant to ranked lists generally, and not always by accident. The same problem arises with what the highest-paid rugby players earn, where the sport’s own regulations keep the top of the pay scale confidential from rival clubs.
Several other players are routinely named in strongest-ever lists. We are not repeating those rankings here, because in researching this page we could not trace their strength figures to a named, checkable published source — only to other lists.
That does not mean the claims are false. It means they are unverified, and our research and sourcing policy treats an untraceable number as something to leave out rather than repeat. A page that quietly recycles other people’s unsourced numbers becomes another source for the next writer to recycle, and the claim gets stronger with each retelling while the evidence stays at zero.
If a union or club publishes standardised testing, this page will say so.
What would actually settle it
Three things would turn this from anecdote into evidence:
A published, common test. One protocol, one set of equipment, applied across squads, with results released.
Scrum force measurement. The technology to instrument a scrum and measure applied force exists and has been used in research. Published data across international packs would be far more informative than bench presses.
Separating strength from mass. Rugby forwards are heavy as well as strong, and the two get conflated constantly. Force relative to bodyweight would tell a different story from raw totals.
Until any of that exists, the honest position is the one at the top of this page: Sheridan has the best-documented case, and everything beyond that is reputation.
